I thought that I would start off the blog with something I did that was actually interesting. Christmas 2006, my friend and I journeyed to the big apple. It was simply amazing. We got off airplane, got our luggage and headed to the curb to wave down a taxi. As we approached the line of people, who like us were waiting for a ride, two woman right in front of us went at it and nearly shed blood fighting for a taxi. At this moment I realized that i love New York. There is something about the hustle and bustle of the city that never sleeps that I yearned to be a part of. The city is amazing so rich of history, culture, and character. the picture above is the first sight that I saw of Times Square. we rounded the corner and my jaw hit the pavement. I grabbed Bekah and we took a picture to capture the moment. The hilarious thing about this picture is that the Loon that is holding bunny ears is a complete stranger. We didn't see him before or after the picture was taken. I did so much in New York, I could dedicate an entire blog to writing about it. I won't but I will just point out the highlights of the trip. The memory that stands out the most is one that makes me laugh out loud every time I think about it. Bekah and I were walking down the street, minding our own business when out of nowhere a man (That was without a doubt the gayest man I've ever seen) popped out of nowhere, linked arms with us and walked with us down the street. I was baffled. I got so nervous I had no idea what to do. Just let him do it? Beat the living crap out of him? Bekah and I exchanged many nervous glances at each other, him, and then each other before I awkwardly spit out "Hi." He walked on with us telling us what pretty girls we were, then out of nowhere he announced(quite proudly) that he was a GUGolo. We asked him if he meant gigolo. His response was what made this story. He said "Ah haha a gugulo is a gigolo honey!"All three of us laughed out loud and then Bekah and I unlinked from him and walked as fast as we could in the opposite direction. We went to the ballet, The Nutcracker. It was here that I realized that my body is a complete waste of space. It was amazing, there were 4 yr. old children out on the stage dancing their little hearts out. I loved it. On new years eve Bekahs's uncle took us to times square. We left many hours before the clock stuck midnight and we still didn't even get into the square. We did however get to stand on the street just outside the main event was happening. I've never been so claustrophobic in my life! There was an estimated 1,000,000 people in Times Square alone, and even more on the outside streets where we stood. I swear people were standing right on top of me. We had heard stories of the romantic new years kiss that occurs on this night in this beautiful place so my friend and I had it all planned out. It was here that we would meet our one true love. When the ball dropped that man would push his way to through the crowd to grab us in his arms and give us that kiss that would forever changed our lives....short and sweet this did not happen. Every one there seemed to have remembered to bring their significant other that night, so while everyone else there enjoyed that long awaited smooch...I got mine from Bekah. On a happier note, the streets were so crammed that for about 47 glorious minutes I was pushed up against a GORGEOUS man who just so happened to be French!!! Who needs a new years kiss after that?? Not me. Being me I called my family wishing them a happy new year...forgetting the time change...it was only 10:00 for them. I'm sure they still appreciated it. My favorite night however was not one spent roaming the streets, or at an event. Nope, it was spent
Okay moving on in this wild story of my favorite night. We did finally get out. We got up to our apartment and decided that we wanted to watch a movie. What would a movie be without snacks? So back down we went (we took the stairs) to our favorite corner market to pick up chips, cookie dough, and ice cream. We went back home and plugged in a movie, but of course after we made our skin silky smooth by applying our lovely face masks. All in all it was quite an adventurous night. Another fine night Bekah and I ventured to Times Square together to just have a look at that beautiful city. When I look at the pictures I am still in awe that I was actually there. While walking down the street you are constantly attacked by people trying to sell you clothes, jewelry, you name it they're selling it. Usually a simple "no
thanks" will shake them right of. However one man was bound and determined to sell his CD to us. He was a "raising artist" he told us. He said that his lyrics were amazing and that someday we could say "I knew him even before he was known across the world." In short we bought a CD. That was longer then a year ago...Have you heard of him??? One of the more touching things that we did was going to Ground Zero. It truly was devastating. 911 never seemed as real as standing there looking at the destruction and heartache that was left behind. One of bekah's uncles works in a ridiculously tall building right across the street from Ground Zero. We went up to the top of the building and were able to look right down into Ground Zero. When we were back on the ground they allow you to walk around around the perimeter of the Reconstruction. It was truly heartbreaking. People would write on the walls names of people they knew who were killed or other remarks about remembering 911. I really started to cry when I looked through the gate and into the rebuilding area . Amongst all the wreckage and destruction there was our flag . Still waving. It touched my heart not only for those who lost their lives that day , those who continue to risk their lives each day for us,but it also reminded me of grandpa and how proud he was of this country and how much he loved it.
The list of things that I did, saw, heard, felt and experienced while in New York could go on forever! Every time a scene from a movie that was filmed in NYC is playing on our TV, I get as excited as I had the time before as I announce to my family that "I've been there! I was standing RIGHT THERE!!!" I'm sure that they are tired of hearing it, but I'll never get tired of saying it!

Aspen... thank you so much for updating your blog. I can tell that your trip holds a lot more than just silly teenage memories, it holds a part of who you are. I am so glad you got to experience this. You make me want to go back to New York and actually stay longer than one day. That picture of you and that CD-selling man is ADORABLE... you are so cute and so is he :) Keep updating... I know you've got more exciting entries like this one (that actually made me tear up!) up your sleeve. (P.S. you and my parents are one in the same, I yearn for the day when they stop saying "I've been there" everytime a New York scene comes on screen!)
Aspen, I never get tired of anything you have to say because everything you say, you say with so much of yourself. Great summary of your trip, and I can't wait to go there so you can say in person "This is it!"
Love, mom ps, why does everyone hold up bunny ears and why do you and Bekah hold them in front of yourselves all the time?
Aspen, Dad just got on to read about NYC and then he said "cool slideshow of St. Thomas" and I said "she doesn't have a slideshow of St. Thomas..." and then I got on and scrolled to the bottom (I only read NYC and then saw "and so it begins" and stopped)....COOL SLIDESHOW! It makes me homesick for someplace that isn't even my home! I loved your clip too....you and Dad...what am I going to do with you two?! Love, mom
Aspen, with your love for travel, I know of a great place in the Middle East that would be perfect for you to come visit. Tell your Mom and Dad that we would take good care of you :) Sister Cummings
As I was reading about your trip to New York, it brought back all my memories of my trips there. It was amazing. So much to do and to see. We loved going to a little Deli to get a great sandwich. The time we took Dani, she was so excited to tell everyone at home that she actually got to eat at a REAL New York Deli! The subways had alot to be desired though! YUK. The first time I saw the Statue of Liberty, it almost brought me to my knees. It looked so majestic and beautiful. That was when I realized how much pride I had in this fine country of ours.
And I always remember Don during the month of July because he was such a Patriot. I loved that in him.
Good job on the story Aspen. Love,
Aunt Mainie
